  • Going Deep Underground in the Manhattan Mine

Spent an afternoon in the desert exploring the massive Manhattan Mine. This was a gold and silver mine that was worked from the early 1900s until the late 1940s. The Manhattan Mine's layout is very unique and somewhat confusing because a long, narrow, deep, crevice-like quarry was dug with tunnels and vertical shafts bisecting it at all angles. In fact, I was able to enter the mine by one tunnel and exit by another tunnel! While underground, I located a large, non-flooded vertical shaft with an impressive wooden headframe above it. There was also a lot of extensive underground tunneling. Outside, the quarry floor itself was pierced with vertical shafts that led to lower levels. Unfortunately, most of these shafts were all flooded with very deep water. At the end of this video, I di...

http://www.meetup.com/Functional-Thursday/events/219984096/ Godzilla is attacking New York, and your task is to choose, for each shelter in the city, a nearest shelter to evacuate to. Luckily, distance between shelters is measured by Manhattan length, which allows us to complete the task in O(n log n) time. We present two algorithms: an algorithmic solution that solves the problem by a list-homomorphism, and a data structure based solution that exploits a "thinning" property.

Unfortunately, most of these shafts were all flooded with very deep water. At the end of this video, I discovered an unmapped, downward-sloping tunnel near the Manhattan Mine. This tunnel had water in it not too long ago and there were many hoof prints in it, so it seemed to be a watering hole for wild burros who actually enter the mine and walk down the sloping tunnel to where the water would be.

English/Nat For decades homeless people in New York have sought shelter in the maze of railway and subway tunnels that run beneath the city. Their underground existence - one of almost total isolation from the outside world - has become a legend among New Yorkers. Over the years, many have built subterranean homes where they cook, care for pets and work hard to keep out the bitter cold. And they've ignored attempts to shift them. But now, the Amtrack railway company which owns the tunnels has decided it wants the tunnel dwellers out once and for all. Few passers-by ever notice the tunnel dwellers slipping through these gates and descending to their underworld community. New Yorkers know they're there, but few spare them a thought and even fewer have ever encountered them or seen how they live. Down below, the tunnel dwellers have collected the trappings of everyday life. Once underground, a tunnel dweller's biggest worry is watching out for the trains that speed by at 70 miles an hour. (110 kilometres per hour) But that danger aside, some say they prefer living here, away from the chaos of modern society. SOUNDBITE: "I basically simplified this existence. One has to be resourceful and that's the key to it all. Boiling water are the few necessities in this existence. I had ten, 12 people dwelling here for about a two-year time period." SUPER CAPTION: Bernard Isaac, Tunnel Dweller There's a rigorous routine to life underground; although the tunnels provide shelter, they are not warm. Bernard's biggest priority is collecting enough wood each day to keep the fire going. He also gets up in the early hours each day to go out to collect bottles and cans for recycling. That's how he makes money for food and other necessities. The hard grind means there's no time for drugs and alcohol. Bernard and his neighbors are strictly anti-substance abuse and wouldn't welcome addicts into their midst. Many people would find it hard to comprehend why anyone would chose to live underground. But Margaret Morton, a photojournalist who has recently published a book about life in tunnels, has come to understand it. SOUNDBITE: "Homeless people, interestingly enough, have created their own housing, they've created a place for themselves along the street, and they found that, ironically, it creates a situation that's much closer to what one could have in an apartment because they can have their own possessions, they can have their own furniture - a table, a chair, a desk, a bed. They can have pets, which they can't have in a shelter, and they can have a sense of community." SUPER CAPTION: Margaret Morton, Photojournalist Bernard has been in the tunnel for about ten years. But soon he will be leaving, not only because Amtrak is asking him to, but because he feels ready for a new challenge. His former neighboUr, Bob Kalinski, moved out two months ago into housing provided by the city for former homeless people like the tunnel dwellers. He's enjoying his life above ground, but it's been a big adjustment. SOUNDBITE: "Our average was zero to ten below. We were built, we were bundled for it and used to it and so I never had a cold. You know, it's just the idea, it wore on me after a while. The constant getting up... times I didn't want to go out... wasn't feeling good. Then after I had a heart attack it was kind of hard for me, even though we still did it." SUPER CAPTION: Bob Kalinski, Former Tunnel Dweller The city has started a programme to get homeless people out of shelters and off the streets and into decent, affordable housing. Bob got moved quickly, but Bernard, one of the first to sign up, is still waiting. Others, however, don't want to move. Go to the http://www.thepawsouls.com to take action NYC ACC EXPOSED -DISTURBING - HELP SAVE NYC SHELTER ANIMALS-END KILLINGS The New York City Animal Care and Control - with its new name Animal Care Centers is far from a caring center. Learn the truth about the NYC ACC , NYC Animal shelter. How can the wealthiest and greatest city in the world turn it's back on the NYC homeless and abandoned animals. This place is an animal Holocaust, with a model that is set on killing rather than focusing on adoption and saving the lives oof these animals. There are simple easy to implement solutions, but fall upon deaf ears and bureaucracy. Bureaucracy is slowing down any changes and thousands of animals have perished during the 20 years people have been trying to get shelter reform. Why would the leadership of Animal Care Centers of NYC , namely the NYC Dept of Health and NYC ACC who is overseen by the DOH allow animals to get sick. Is this really the best they can do. If this were a human crisis of a disease ravaged center would things move faster. The helpless animals that enter the NYC animal care and control (previous name) should not pay with their lives. If these animals are adoptable they do not deserve to get sick and be killed for these treatable illnesses. Many that enter do not come out or if they do quite often are ill because of all the diseases that run rampant in this antiquated Place that was never designed to hold animals for long period of time. Other states have successful programs implemented and if New York City powers that be such as the Department of Health of NYC and ACC, actually had any compassion many animals would not go through the nightmares at the shelter, and pay with their. After watching the video please take action, to try and put an end to this broken and pathetic NYC animal shelter system. Outrage is coming from all over the United States and even abroad because nobody can believe the wealthiest and greatest city in the world turns its back on these animals,. Animals lives matter. And the only possibility for change is awareness of what is really going on in the public taking action. *** To support Adrianna's project through May 5, 2017, please consider making a donation to her GoFundMe campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/adriannas-bat-mitzvah-project *** To support a project my awesome daughter is doing, I am hosting a challenge for woodworkers called the Shelter Challenge. Through May 5, 2017, I challenge you to make a toy and donate it to a local shelter. There are no prizes, no videos needed, just e-mail a picture of the toy and the name of the shelter to me at robert@manhattanwoodproject.com. You can see Victor V.'s awesome puzzle video at https://youtu.be/u1bI37VS_mo. If you like this video, please give it a thumbs-up and leave a comment! http://www.meetup.com/Functional-Thursday/events/219984096/ Godzilla is attacking New York, and your task is to choose, for each shelter in the city, a nearest shelter to evacuate to. Luckily, distance between shelters is measured by Manhattan length, which allows us to complete the task in O(n log n) time. We present two algorithms: an algorithmic solution that solves the problem by a list-homomorphism, and a data structure based solution that exploits a "thinning" property.
